UTA textbook contest winners

Used Textbook Association Awards Students $500 in Textbook Contest

Omaha, Nebr., January 14, 2008 - The Used Textbook Association offered college students a chance to win $500 for textbook purchases. It was an offer that more than 19,000 students accepted by entering the Used Textbook Association online textbook scholarship contest. The students registered in the national contest that awarded 10 winning students $500 each for textbook purchases.

The Used Textbook Association contest, the first the organization has hosted for students, was promoted in participating college bookstores and on the Used Textbook Association website.

The Used Textbook Association, along with member college and university bookstores, concentrates on reducing textbook costs to students. This contest moved that goal into action with the $500 prizes to help students buy books.

"This was our first contest, and we weren't sure how students would respond," said Jim Sheppard, Executive Director, Used Textbook Association. "The strong number of students who signed up was exciting for us. The UTA recognizes the support that students bring to our organization. With this contest, we could demonstrate our appreciation."

The winners include students from community colleges and major universities across the country.
"Thank you for the $500 textbook scholarship, and more importantly for your organization's work to defray the costs of textbooks and thereby help out disadvantaged students," said winner Matthew Kaminker, student at Portland Community College. Kaminker's response was echoed by other winners.

"We are thrilled to be a part of this great event," said Ernest Mooney, President Virginia Book Company, and Used Textbook Association member.

Winners of the national Used Textbook Association contest include: Paris Anderson, Virginia Commonwealth University; Lisa Barnes, Lenoir Community College; Deondrick Bessard, University of Louisiana at Lafayette; Shawn Brown, University of Minnesota; Matthew Kaminker, Portland Community College; Devin LaVoice, Temple College; Michelle LeBlanc, Cuyahoga Community College; Patricia Rivera, Our Lady of the Lake University; Jennifer Tobin, Antelope Valley College; and Brandie Turner, Oregon State University.
