Used Textbook Association Scholarships Recognize Faculty Support of Textbook Affordability

Omaha, Nebr., August 18, 2008 - The Used Textbook Association has announced the winners of a scholarship program that recognized the efforts of faculty to provide affordable textbooks for students. The Faculty Recognition Textbook Scholarship Contest focused on the importance of the faculty members in the textbook process. Each winning faculty member received a textbook scholarship of $500 from the UTA to award to students.

UTA members nominated faculty members that demonstrated a commitment to affordable and used textbooks. Entries were evaluated on faculty members' efforts and impact to help students.

The nominations illustrate the positive impact of faculty decisions. These actions included faculty selecting older editions of textbooks so that current students could sell their books for more money, and new students could save by purchasing used textbooks; diligently submitting adoption information before the deadline so that textbooks were identified as needed for the upcoming class session and more were purchased from current students; and even adjusting a class syllabus to accommodate a less expensive used textbook edition.

The winners of the Faculty Recognition Textbook Scholarship Contest are:
- April Atkinson, Our Lady of the Lake University; nominated by Raju Patel, University Bookstore
- Eric DeGroff, Regent University; nominated by Peter Dacanay, Regent University Bookstore
- Virginia Johnson, University of Alabama; nominated by Bernadette Chavira-Trull, University Supply Store
- Frances Lichtman, Alma College; nominated by Donna Sinclair, Kiltie Korner Bookstore
- Jeff Sulcer, Kaskaskia College; nominated by James Kellermann, Kaskaskia College Bookstore
- Steve VanderVeen, Hope College; nominated by Mary Deenik, Hope-Geneva Bookstore
- Matthew Wexler, Arcadia University; nominated by Lydia Whitelaw, Arcadia University Bookstore
- Brian Williams, Southeast Technical Institute; nominated by Megan Ulmer, Southeast Tech Bookstore
